what moves me…

Portrait von Annkathrin Immler (1/6)

About me

Beautiful pictures. Uncomfortable questions. Radical freedom.

I am Annkathrin Immler, a painter working between Isny and Munich.

What if everything could be different?

My art begins with this question. For me, the white canvas is a place of boundless freedom. No social rules apply here, no fixed truths, no limits to what can be imagined. What seems impossible in reality is allowed to come into being here.

Artist statement

Art arises from necessity.

B. Wells

I paint to make possibilities visible. My pictures are colorful, playful and full of lightness. But behind the aesthetics there is more than the wish for beautiful pictures. I am interested in the contradiction between what we see and what we suspect behind it. Between the longing for harmony and a world that is increasingly falling out of balance.

I believe in the power of beauty – not as an escape from reality, but as a counter-vision to it.

In my work, apparent lightheartedness meets social questions. How free are we really? Which rules shape how we think and act? Why do we cling to structures we should have questioned long ago? And when did we stop imagining a different world?

I do not want to provide answers. I want to open spaces. For doubt, for contradiction, for imagination. My pictures are allowed to simply bring joy. But they may also irritate, provoke and invite further thought. What matters is the freedom of viewers to decide for themselves how deeply they want to immerse themselves.

The canvas as a utopian space

The anarchy symbol with which I sign my work is more than a mark of recognition. It stands for an idea: the absence of rule, freedom from prescribed orders, and the possibility of thinking about things in a fundamentally different way.

What seems barely imaginable or hard to implement in social reality can become real on the canvas. Here, boundaries lose their self-evidence. Here, existing conditions do not have to remain without alternative.

While we are confronted with the climate crisis, social tensions and the failure of political and social systems, we often fail even on a small scale to meet our own standards. We function, adapt and try to meet expectations. But what if we could free ourselves from that? If we no longer merely managed what is, but designed again what could be?

For me, utopia does not begin with a finished model of society. It begins with the freedom to think differently again at all.

A map of the world that does not include Utopia is not worth even glancing at.

Oscar Wilde

I carry this thought into my pictures. Because we will hardly shape a future that we cannot imagine. For me, hope is therefore not naive optimism, but a conscious decision against the lack of alternatives.

My pictures do not claim that the world is fine. They insist that it could be different.

Between Isny and Munich

I work between Isny and Munich. My studios are places of creation, experimentation and exchange. Visitors are warmly welcome to get to know my works and the creative process on site, and to talk with me about art, freedom and new perspectives.

Because everything begins with an idea. And nothing has to stay the way it is.
